The main types of threads and their purpose are sewing threads, which are used for sewing, as well as for making fabrics, embroidery threads and knitting threads.
By purpose, the threads are subdivided into:
- sewing threads, used for sewing on sewing machines,
- universal threads, used for sewing on sewing machines, overlocks and for hand sewing,
- decorative threads, used for finishing seams on sewing machines and overlocks,
- embroidery threads, used for manual embroidery, as well as for embroidery on automatic embroidery machines,
- special threads (heat-resistant, transparent, extra strong, etc.) are necessary for sewing special products.

According to the composition, the threads are mainly divided into: cotton, linen, silk, woolen threads, polyester threads (viscose), polyester threads (lavsan), polyamide (nylon) threads and monofilaments (fishing line), fiberglass threads, threads with metal foil.
